Safestart Health Initiative - Portable Ultrasound for Pregnant Women in Akuapem South

ICDP Ghana is raising funds to procure portable ultrasound machines to provide critical medical relief to pregnant women in the Akuapem South Municipality. The Municipality has a projected population of 79,253 residents in 2024 with about 52% being women. The constituency is served by 6 health centres, 24 CHPS compounds and 2 private clinics. However, pregnant women can only access ultrasound services if they are lucky to find and afford one in one of the 6 health centres. This places a huge burden on pregnant women in the municipality. The situation leads to inaccessibility of vital services, long travel time, huge transport fares, and non-utilization of the service due to unaffordability. ICDP Ghana has piloted an initiative known as the SafeStart Project in Akuapem South Municipality, which is geared towards providing ultrasound scan services in rural communities across Ghana, starting in the Eastern region. Out of 300 women engaged and interviewed, 249 of them were referred to private clinics or district hospital, underscoring a significant reliance on these healthcare facilities. This high referral rate indicates a substantial demand for ultrasound (portable) services, which may not be fully met within the local community. At ICDP, we have been able to procure one portable ultrasound which we have used to support vulnerable pregnant women in the Akuapem South Municipality. With your help, we can do more by providing additional portable ultrasound machines to support pregnant women in the municipality. We need a minimum of five (5) portable ultrasound machines.
