The Emerging Public Leaders (EPL) Cohort 6 is undertaking a Community Immersion Project on the topic "Mitigating the Ecological Crisis: Addressing the Environmental Impact of Galamsey in Ghana," which seeks to evaluate the impact of illegal mining (Galamsey) on the livelihood of the people of Asiakwa.

OBJECTIVES

Policy Assessment:
● Identify systemic policy implementation challenges resulting in lawless conduct within small-scale mining operations.
● Evaluate the effectiveness of current policies and interventions aimed at addressing galamsey at the local level.
Community Engagement:
● Engage indigenous community members to validate the existential challenges posed by illegal mining.
● Identify community-driven solutions and policy recommendations.
Knowledge Generation:
● Contribute to knowledge generation efforts and literature on illegal small-scale mining in Ghana.
● Understand challenges faced by multi-sectoral institutions whose mandates relate directly to illegal small-scale mining.
Impact Assessment:
● Assess the environmental, social, and economic impacts of galamsey on targeted communities.
